Peter Smith was educated at Canford Public School in Dorset and was a full-back in their rugby XV. After going up to Oxford, however, he played for the hockey XI, and went on to make his England hockey début against Scotland at Aberdeen in 1950. He later captained both his country, and Gloucestershire. Smith also played for Surrey, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, the South, the Midlands, City of Oxford HC, Kidderminster, and Hawks HC of Surrey. He went to the 1952 Helsinki Olympics as a reserve but never got a start in the British team that won the bronze medal.
Smith was also a fine cricketer and represented the United Services during his time in the Royal Navy. He continued playing hockey at the highest level beyond his 40th birthday.
