From 1970-73 Urban Cleve was second vice-president of the German Union of former track and field athletes and then served as chairman of the group from 1990-94. He was educated as a civil construction engineer, specializing in power stations. Cleve won German national titles in the 800 in 1951, in the 3×1000 m in 1952, and in the 4×400 relay in 1955. He also took part in the 1953 FISU Sport Weeks and won three golds: in the 800 m, the 4×400 m relay, and the sprint medley relay. At the Helsinki Games in 1952 he was eliminated in the semifinals over 800 metres.
