Long hurdler Willi Kürten was eliminated in the semifinals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the 400 hurdles. He never won a German title, but was runner-up in 1931, 1932 and 1936. Kürten was killed in action during World War II on the Eastern front in July 1944.
