German shot putter Michael Mertens failed to reach the Olympic finals twice, firstly at Atlanta in 1996 and then at Sydney in 2000. At the German nationals he won two silver and six bronze medals. Mertens was a trained hydraulic engineer, and became a precision mechanic.
