Lagoudakis, who fought in the Cretan Revolution of 1889, was a medic in the 1897 Greco-Turkish war. He later went to Egypt to combat leprosy, and infected himself with the disease in order to study it better. He became known as “the man who never shook hands”, and eventually died of the disease he tried to cure, but only at the age of 82.
