Biography
János Karlovits was an outstanding pole vaulter of the 1920s in Hungary. He won the Hungarian pole vault championship four times (1923, 1926, 1928-29) and broke the Hungarian record five times, improving from 3.71m to 3.91m in the last five years of the decade. He took part in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, where he finished in excellent eighth place. Even in 1941, at the age of 42, he was still good enough to clear 3.60m. In the last years of his sports career, he oversaw MAC’s tennis division and worked as sports journalist. After the Second World War, he left Hungary and settled in Brazil.
