Lajos Kurunczy started his athletics career in the colours of Törekvés, and by 1917 had won three championship titles (100m, 200m and 400m). He moved to MTK in 1920 and three years later to KAOE. On 19 August 1923, he was the first Hungarian to run 400 meters under 50 seconds. At the Paris Olympics, Kurunczy was a member of the 4x100m relay squad that finished fourth. Between 1917-24 he won eight Hungarian titles.
After finishing his career as an athlete, Kurunczy went back to Törekvés as a trainer until he retired in 1936. After finally ending his long association with athletics, Kurunczy turned to his love of painting and had several exhibitions. At the Hungarian athletics championship, the 4x100m relay is held every year in his honour as the Kurunczy Lajos Memorial Competition.
Personal Bests: 100 – 10.8 (1924); 200 – 22.0 (1923); 400 – 49.7 (1923).
