Pál Szalay was a versatile athlete. He competed mostly in track and field, specializing in sprints and long jump. He started his sports career in the colors of Kőbánya TE, and later moved to MTK in 1911. As an athlete, he won two Hungarian championships (100 and 220 yard) in 1913 and participated at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. In World War I, he was on the front for almost five years and after returning home Szalay could not perform at his previous level. In addition to athletics, Szalay also played football in the colors of MTK between 1910-22. From 1922 onwards he worked as a football coach, first in Germany, and from 1930-58 in Italy. Szalay graduated as an engineer.
