At St. Xaviers College James Stanton Hall was a talented all-round sportsman who played cricket, hockey, and football. Hall was noted for his abilities as a track athlete with him representing India at two Olympic Games as a sprinter.
Hall ran in the 100 metres and the 200 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympics but did not advance from his heat in either race. He was also scheduled to run in the 400 metres, the 4 × 100 metres relay, and the 4 × 400 metres relay in Paris, but did not start in any of those. Four years later Hall captained the Indian athletics team at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. He ran in the 200 and 400 metres reaching the quarter-finals in the latter. Hall died in May 1929 in Kolkata after contracting typhoid fever. He was only 26-years-old.
