Biography

P. J. Bermingham was a weight-thrower who competed at the 1924 Olympics in the discus throw. Bermingham won 10 Irish discus titles – the IAAA titles in 1919-20, and NACAI titles in 1923-27, 1930, and 1932-33. He was the first person to win five English AAA discus titles, winning in 1924-26, 1932, and 1934. He also won eight Irish titles in the 56-lb. weight throw – four for distance (1923, 1925-27), and four for height (1923, 1925-26, 1929).

In September 1927, at the Leinster Championships in Carlow, Bermingham, known variously as Paddy or P. J., threw 151-6½ (46.19), an Irish record that stood until 1939. Bermingham was from Moyasta in County Clara and became a police officer, joining the Dublin Metropolitan Police in 1907.
