Sergio D'Asnasch

Sergio D’Asnasch was the first athlete from the club Atletica Riccardi of Milano to compete at the Olympics. He began athletics with the shot put under coach Gippi Usuelli, but two years later switched to the long jump and was placed on the National team for the first time in 1953.

In 1954 D’Asnasch competed at the Bern European Championships where he helped the Italian team to fifth place in the 4x100 relay. At the 1955 Barcelona Mediterranean Games he won a bronze medal in the 100 metres and a gold in the 4x100. At the 1956 Melbourne Olympics D’Asnasch was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 200 metres. At his second Europeans, in 1958, he competed only in the relay, where the Italian team reached the final but was disqualified. From 1953-58 D’Asnasch earned 12 international caps.

After his active athletics career, D’Asnasch became a journalist and editor at ANSA, the best-known Italian news agency, where his wife Luciana Veschi, a swimmer in her youth, was a TV director.
