Born in Genova, Silvio De Florentiis was the son of Umberto, who in the 1930s was Italian champion in cross-country running, half-marathon, and the 3×5000 relay, and competed at the 1938 European Championships in Paris in the marathon.
Silvio, small in stature and slender, after having dominated some road races in 1960, ran his first marathon on 10 July 1960 but his best time of the year was at the Olympic race in Roma (2-31:54). He competed in seven internationals from 1960-65. For three consecutive years, from 1958-60, and then in 1963, he was Italian champion in the half-marathon competing for U.S. Trionfo Ligure. He ended his career in 1965 at the age of 30.
