Biography

Silvano Meconi was born in Cortona, in the Umbria region of Italy. As a youngster he worked as a railwayman and, after moving to Tuscany, maintained the area tradition for producing fine local shot putters, started by the 1950 European Championship silver medallist Angiolo Profeti. Meconi increased the Italian record from 15.82 m to 18.82 m between 1955-60, which at the time was the second-best throw in Europe.

Meconi won the 1961 “Six Nations“ in Paris with a put of 18.62 m. He was 10th at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, 13th at the 1960 Roma Games, fifth at the 1958 Europeans, and also won two medals at the Mediterranean Games. Meconi was always among the best on his day but could never apply the right mental attitude on the big occasions. Domestically he won 13 Italian titles between 1955 and 1968) and collected 47 international caps between 1955-69.

Personal Best: SP – 18.82 (1960).
