Biography
Alessandria’s Roberto Penna was an athlete of the early 20th century. After a win in the 1,500 m at the 1903 Alba’s Italian championships, he switched to 400 metres. He stood out in 1905 when in Roma, two days after Christmas, he ran 54.6. This result, together with his 1906 selection for the Athina Games (in which he did not start), saw him as one of the best Italian specialists in the 400 metres, an event that in those years was only raced in the cities of Torino and Roma.
In 1907, with the domination in Italy of Emilio Lunghi, Penna struggled and his appearance at the London Games saw him eliminated early.
