Biography

Carmen Phipps had her first major international success at the 1946 Central American and Caribbean Games, where she won gold in the high jump. Two years later, she represented Jamaica at the 1948 London Olympics, where she was entered into five events, but only competed in her specialty, the high jump, where she placed joint-11th. She returned to the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1950, but had to settle for silver after losing her title to her compatriot Vinton Beckett. After retiring from active competition, she married Olympic champion athlete Les Laing in 1953 and moved to the United States.

Personal Best: HJ – 1.609 (1948).
