Biography

From the Rikkyo University Athletics Club, Kumao Aochi participated in the Hakone Ekiden long-distance relay consecutively from 1934-37. In 1934 he set a Japanese record of 1:54.0 for 800 metres during the Japan-American International Athletics Competition. In the same year, he won the 800 title at the Japan Athletics Championships as well as winning gold at the 1934 Far Eastern Games. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, he failed to advance to the second round and did not start the 1,500. After his active career, he joined Mitsui Sunagawa Coal Mine in Hokkaido (later Mitsui Mining) in 1937.
