In 1992 Kim competed at his home edition of the World Junior Championships in Seoul, where he placed 16th overall. Four years later he represented South Korea at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but finished down in 32nd place after only clearing 2.15 metres in qualifying, well short of the 2.28 metres needed to progress to the final. Kim won another silver at a major competition when he finished in a three-way tie with 2.19 metres at the 2002 Asian Games, also in Busan.
