Biography

Latvian track and field athlete Vilis Cimmermanis represented the Rīgās Garnizona Sporta Klub where he specialised as a distance runner. Cimmermanis won more than 20 national titles during his career including victories in the 800 metres (1923), 1,500 metres (1920, 1922–23, 1925), 3,000 metres (1922–23), 5,000 metres (1920–23), and 10,000 metres (1920–21, 1923). In 1924 he ran in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the Paris Olympics but did not feature in either race. Four years later he ran in the marathon at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics but did not complete the course. Cimmermanis also competed in speed skating, winning several medals at the Latvian championships. He was only 39-years-old when he died in May 1936 in Rīga.
