Although he began his athletics career as a distance and cross-country runner, Charel Sowa competed at four Olympic Games in both walk events. During his career he was a four-time selection as Luxembourg’s Athlete of the Year (1964, 1967, 1971-72). He later became a coach, notably coaching his son, Marco, who competed as a walker at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Charel Sowa was also a board member of the Luxembourg Athletics Association, and served as President his club, CA Fola.
