Biography

From the mid-1920s to the early 1930s José Lucílo Iturbe was one of the best track and field athletes in Mexico. Iturbe won ten national titles with three in the 400 metres (1925–26, 1931) and seven in the 800 metres (1926–32). His best international performance came at the 1926 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mexico where he won gold in the 400 metres, 800 metres, and the 4 x 400 metres relay. At the 1930 Games he won another gold in the relay, along with silver in the 800 metres and bronze in the 400 metres. He ran in all three races at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics but only advanced from the first round in the 400 metres. Four years later Iturbe ran in the 800 metres at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics where he finished in last place in his heat.

Personal Bests: 400 – 49.0 (1931); 800 – 1:55.6 (1932).
