Biography

Carlos Alberto Abaúnza competed for Nicaragua at the Olympics before moving to Florida where he had a lengthy career in finance. Abaúnza was born in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua in 1959, becoming a talented track and field athlete and specializing in the high jump. At the 1976 Montréal Olympics he failed to record a height but a year later he won silver at the Central American Games in El Salvador.

Abaúnza moved to the United States where he worked in the finance sector in Florida. In finance and accounting he held multiple senior roles at various companies including Florida East Coast Industries, Knight-Ridder Inc, and World Fuel Services. At the American-Nicaraguan Foundation (ANF) Abaúnza served as the director and chair of the audit committee. As the chief financial officer (CFO) of I-595 Express LLC he oversaw a $1.7 billion project for the operation and overhaul of the I-595 highway. Following the completion of the project Abaúnza joined the Miami Foundation as their CFO in 2016.
