Biography

Axel Simonsen competed in the notorious 1912 Olympic marathon, finishing 23rd as third best Scandinavian behind two Swedes. Later that year he set a Norwegian record in track marathon with 2-40:48 h. In 1911, he already set a national record in the 20 kilometres (1-11.27).

Simonsen first worked as a clerk for a moving agency. Later, he was head of the fertilizer department of the agricultural cooperative Felleskjøpet in Eastern Norway. He lived in Oslo and remained unmarried.
