Erling Vinne won his first gold in the triple jump at Norwegian Championships in 1912. At the subsequent Stockholm Olympics he placed fourth behind three Swedes. Vinne won four more golds in this event at the National Championships in 1914, 1917, 1918, and 1919 as well as four silvers in 1915, 1920, 1921, and 1922. In 1917, he also took silver in the 110 m hurdles. In 1917-19 he was one of the world’s top triple jumpers with performances beyond 14.50 m. In 1920, he returned to the Olympic Games but disappointed with just 13.34 m in the qualification, almost one meter below his season’s best.
According to the Norwegian censuses Vinne worked as a clerk and later as a haulier. In 1937, at the age of 45, he wedded Ingeborg Elise Winne Haug. The marriage remained childless.
