Biography

Thelma Kench was a New Zealand sprinter. Kench was born in Palmerston North and was trained by her father. In 1930 Kench won the national title in the 100 metres. Kench’s time equalled the world record, and at the age of 16 years, she was the youngest athlete to hold the title. Kench competed in the 100 metres at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. Kench reached the semi-finals but finished in last place in her heat. After a brief track career Kench retired from the sport in 1933 at the age of 19.
