Biography

In addition to competing in racewalking Teodor Bieregowoj also fought in the Polish resistance during World War II, using the code name Rekin. As an athlete Bieregowoj set several long-standing Polish records in racewalking, recording times in the 20km and 50km events in 1936 that stood until 1956 and 1963, respectively. He competed in the 50km race at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he finished ninth. When World War II broke out in September 1939 Bieregowoj was wounded and taken prisoner in Gdynia, before eventually escaping. He returned to Lublin where he worked in the telecommunications department at a railway station. After the war Bieregowoj worked as a steward for the Polish Ocean Lines shipping company.
