Biography

During the 1930s and 1940s Karol Hoffmann was one of the best track and field athletes in Poland, winning dozens of medals at the national championships. Hoffmann focused on any discipline that involved jumping, winning gold at the Polish championships in the long jump (1934–35, 1938–39), triple jump (1936, 1938, 1948), and the high jump (1937–38). His medal haul also included silver in the triple jump (1934–35, 1937, 1939), long jump (1936), and the discus throw (1949), and bronze in the triple jump (1933), high jump (1934), shot put (1934, 1936–37), long jump (1937, 1948), and the discus throw (1948). He had similar success at the Polish indoor championships, winning gold in the high jump (1935), long jump (1937, 1939), and the triple jump (1938). Hoffmann competed in the high jump and triple jump at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, but did not replicate his national success, finishing with a best result of 32nd in the high jump. From 1946 to 1971 he hosted a morning gymnastics programs on Polish Radio in addition to working as an athletics coach.
