Biography

During the 1930s Antoni Maszewski was one of the best track and field athletes in Poland, with him dominating in the 400 metres hurdles. From 1930 to 1938 Maszewski won eight titles in the event at the national championships, only missing out in 1934. He also won gold as part of the quartet that won the 4 x 400 metres relay in 1929 and 1930. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics he once again ran in the 4 x 400 metres relay but the Polish team did not advance from their heat. Maszewski was mobilized into the Polish Army in 1939 and fought in the September Campaign. In 1941 he was in North Africa for the Battle of Tobruk where he received the Cross of Valor for bravery, in addition to being promoted to the rank of captain. He then fought in the Italian Campaign but was killed in action in the Battle of Ancona in August 1944. Maszewski was posthumously promoted to the rank of major and was decorated with multiple honours.

Personal Best: 400 - 50.3 (1936).
