Biography

John Foulkes was Canadian Champion in 1907, 1909, and 1910, losing in the 1908 final. He was an eight-time British Columbian champion, won five Pacific Northwest titles in Tacoma, Washington, and added two Washington state championships in Seattle. Foulkes played on the 1913 Canadian Davis Cup team. Foulkes was born in England, but emigrated to Canada in 1891. He served in World War I as a major in the Canadian Service Corps (4th Canadian Division) and was given a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur for services during World War I and was mentioned in despatches three times in 1917 and 1918. In the 1919 New Year Honours following the war, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. Foulkes was elected to the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1913 Davis Cup team. He was also elected to USTA Pacific Northwest Tennis Hall of Fame in 2008.
