Janusz Sidło was a five-time Olympic javelin thrower who won a silver medal in the event at Melbourne in 1956. He also just missed a medal in 1964 when he placed fourth. Sidło was European Champion in 1954 and 1958 and won a European bronze medal in 1969. He was a four-time champion at the World Festival of Youth Students, winning in 1951, 1955, 1957, and 1959.
In 1956 he set a world record of 83.66 metres. He had a very long career and was world ranked in the top 10 for 18 consecutive years – 1953-70, reaching his career best of 86.22 metres in 1970. In that time he was ranked #1 in the world five times and #2 an additional five times.
