Biography

Teresa Machado was considered the best Portuguese weight thrower of her era. She competed at four Olympic Games (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004), placing 10th in the discus throw, her best event, in 2000 and 11th in 2004. In the discus Machado was an 18-time Portuguese Champion, winning in 1986, 1988, 1991-93, and 1995-2007. She also won 16 shot put national titles in 1988-93 and 1995-2004. She set multiple Portuguese records in both events, leaving the discus mark at 65.40, which she achieved in 1998.

Machado competed in the discus at the World Championships seven times between 1991-2003, placing sixth in 1997 and 10th in 2003. She also made the discus final at the European Championships in 1990, 1998, and 2002, finishing seventh in 2002 as her best placement. She starred at the Ibero-American Championships, winning discus gold in 1990, 1994, and 1998, adding a silver in 2004, and winning shot put bronze in both 1990 and 1998. Machado competed for Sporting from 1986-2003.
