Biography

Portuguese track and field athlete Pedro de Almeida represented Sporting CP in Lisboa, specialising in both the hurdles and the long jump. In his early years de Almeida won more than a dozen national youth titles, including wins in the long jump, shot put, discus, and pentathlon. Moving up to the senior ranks he then began to focus on his two main events, winning three national titles in the 110 metres hurdles (1958, 1961–62), along with five consecutive long jump titles from 1960 to 1964.

De Almeida also had success at international competitions, becoming the long jump champion at the 1960 Ibero-American Championships in Athletics in Santiago. That same year he competed in that event at the 1960 Roma Olympics; however, he failed to advance from the qualifying round, eventually finishing down in 28th place. He returned to the Ibero-American Championships in 1962, where he won silver in the long jump in Madrid. In 1965 de Almeida retired from the sport and moved to Angola.

Personal Best: LJ – 7.62 (1962).
