Virginia Bonci was a Romanian track and field athlete who specialised in the high jump. During her career Bonci won multiple national and Balkan titles, and set a Romanian high jump record in 1974 when she cleared 1.92 metres. In 1968 she won silver at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Madrid, finishing second to the German athlete Rita Kirst. The medal was perfect preparation for the upcoming Olympics in Mexico, but Bonci had a poor Games, finishing 21st out of the 24 athletes who competed. Her best performance came some years later when she won gold at the 1973 Summer Universiade in Moskva. Bonci was married to Șerban Ioan, who competed in the high jump at the 1972 München Olympics.
