With Iolanda Balaş retired, the competition was wide-open. There were 14 competitors, but all jumped 1.74 (5-8½) in the qualifying round to advance to the final round. Eight jumpers were still in after 1.78 metres (5-10), but at 1.80 (5-10¾), only Miloslava Rezková (TCH), Antonina Okorokova (URS), and Valentina Kozyr (URS) were still alive. Režková jumped 1.82 metres (5-11½) on her third attempt to win the gold medal. Okorokova won the silver based on a first-attempt clearance at 1.80 (5-10¾), as Kozyr had needed three shots at that height. Režková was only 18-years-old and was an attractive, bubbly young lady who became one of the most popular champions in Ciudad de México.
