Biography

After graduating from Jelgava Vocational School, Haralds Hāne began his studies at the chemical department of the Rīga Polytechnic Institute. During this time he competed in the 200 metres at the 1912 Olympic Games, but did not qualify for the second round.

During World War I, Hāne was evacuated to Moskva (Moscow) with the university and graduated in 1918. Subsequently, he worked there in the Central Chemistry Laboratory for the next two years. After returning to his hometown, he worked as an engineer at the Rutenberg Tobacco Factory. As a specialist in fermentation processes, he obtained a patent to produce concentrated acetic acid. In the 1930s, he made several study trips to Germany where he probably earned a PhD and attended the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. In the same year, he and his wife were divorced. His son, who was 12-years-old at the time, later emigrated to the USA. In his last years, Hāne worked for the soft drink company E. Arnāla and Sons.

In addition to athletics, Hāne was also engaged in football, for instance as referee of the international match of Lithuania vs. Estonia in 1923.

Personal Best: 200 – unknown.
