Dmitry Nazarov competed in races from 400 m to more than 5,000 m. In 1909, he won one of the first athletic events in Moskva (Moscow) in the 20th century, beating Nikolay Kharkov in a cross-country race of 5 versts (5.34 km). In 1911, he became the first official national record holder in the 800 m. After competing unsuccessfully in the 800 m and 1,500 m at the Stockholm Olympics, Nazarov was one of the athletes from Moskva (Moscow) complaining about discrimination against their teammates from St. Petersburg. Later that year, he suffered a leg injury and was unable to compete in the Russian championships.
