A graduate of the Vladimir Military School in St. Petersburg in 1911, Nikolay Neklepayev served in the infantry of the Russian Imperial Army, eventually reaching the rank of lieutenant.
Neklepayev represented the sports clubs “Sport” (KLS) winning 14 national championship titles: in 1908 and 1909 as triple champion in discus throw, javelin, and shot put, in 1911 in javelin throw and shot put, in 1912 in discus throw, and in 1913 in discus and javelin throw. He added three silver medals in discus (1911) and javelin throw (1912, 1914). Neklepayev set several Russian records with the discus and the javelin. In these events, he also competed in the 1912 Olympic Games. One year later, he placed second with the javelin at the First All-Russian Olympics. At the beginning of his career, he also started in the sprint.
In World War I, Neklepayev was promoted to captain and awarded several degrees of the orders of St. Stanislav and St. Anne for bravery. After the war, he settled in Moskva (Moscow). He took up athletics again and won the Moscow championship in discus throw in 1921. His last known competition was in 1923, when he placed fourth in discus throw and eighth in shot put in the All-Union Physical Culture Festival in Moskva.
