Henry Smith first gained attention at the 1979 South Pacific Games when he took silver in the shot put and bronze in the discus. Four years later he defended his shot put silver, finishing behind New Caledonia’s Arnjolt Beer, but upgraded to gold in the discus. His next stop was the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where he was 17th in the discus and 19th in the shot put. At the 1988 edition in Seoul, he competed only in the discus, where he placed 25th – as of 2016, these remain the best results for Samoa in track and field athletics. In New Zealand, he won a total of five national titles in the discus (1984, 1986-1988, and 1993) and ten in the shot put (1978-1986 except 1982, 1988, and 1993). Following his retirement from competition, remained active administratively in sport and also served as a local politician.
