In addition to being a champion of Czechoslovakia in track and field athletics Václav Hošek was also a member of the resistance during World War II. Hošek was a two-time national champion in the 3,000 metres steeplechase, winning the race in 1935 and 1940. He ran in the race at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but was eliminated in the heats. In 1940 he won the Běchovice-Praha race, the oldest road race in Europe. In World War II Hošek joined the resistance but was later arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to 15 years hard labour. In June 1942 he attempted to escape while working in the local fields but was fatally shot by a farmer.
