The defending champion, Volmari Iso-Hollo, was back and was favored. In 1933, he had bettered the world best with a time of 9:09.4 in a Finnish meet. However, at the 1936 US Olympic Trials, al Manning had run 9:08.2 and was expected to challenge.
At the Olympics, Iso-Hollo took the lead at the end of the first lap and built up a big lead. This was gradually eroded slightly but he won by over 20 metres. Manning was in second place for much of the race but could not maintain the pace and fell out of the medals on the last lap.
