Born in Bulgaria in 1939, Gül Çiray had a distinguished athletics career in Turkey during the 1950s and 1960s. Çiray won gold in the 800 metres at the Balkan Games in both 1958 and 1960, in addition to winning the 2,000 metres cross-country race at the Games on three occasions (1959–60, 1962). In Turkey she won 17 national championship titles and setting more than 40 Turkish records during her career. In 1960 Çiray represented Turkey in the 800 metres at the Roma Olympics but was eliminated in the heats. She later worked as an athletics coach for the national team and continued to compete in veteran events throughout her life.
