Tatyana Skachko took up athletics at age 12. Initially a sprinter, she switched to the long jump when she was 19, and was on the Soviet national team from 1976-82. She won the Olympic bronze in 1980, adding bronzes at the 1977 World Cup and 1979 Universiade. Skachko won her only Soviet title in 1980. Skachko worked as an athletics coach in Luhansk, Ukraine after finishing her sports career.
