Galina Sofina began competing in track and field athletics in 1957, becoming a fine all-round athlete. In 1962 Sofina won bronze as part of the 4 x 200 metres relay team at the USSR Championships, before becoming the national champion in the pentathlon in 1968. Her performance in the latter earned her a place on the Olympic team for the 1968 Games in Mexico City. After putting in some good performances, including placing third in the shot put, her results fell away, with Sofina failing to finish in the fifth discipline, the 200 metres. Despite not scoring any points in that event, she still placed 28th overall.
Following her competitive career Sofina turned to coaching, becoming the senior coach at the Spartak sports society, in addition to working as a youth coach across Moskva. Her son Pavel competed in the shot put at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
