Klavdiya Tochonova won an Olympic bronze in 1952 and a European Championship silver in 1950. She also set a shot put world record of 14.86 in October 1949 in Tbilisi. Tochonova won the shot put at the 1949 and 1951 World Student Games and was 1951 Soviet shot put champion. After finishing her sports career, Tochonova worked as an athletics coach in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).
