Biography

Aleksandr Artynyuk was a Soviet long-distance runner who represented the national team from 1957 until 1962. At the USSR championships Artynyuk won four consecutive titles in the 8 km cross-country race from 1958 to 1961. During the same time he won silver at the championships in the 5,000 metres in 1959, along with bronze in 1960, and bronze in the 10,000 metres in 1959 and 1961. In 1958 Artynyuk finished fifth in the 5,000 metres at the European Championships in Stockholm, before winning silver in the same event one year later at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Wein. These performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1960 Games in Roma, where he came ninth in the final of the 5,000 metres. After his retirement Artynyuk worked as a lecturer in various physical education institutes in Leningrad.
