Anatoly Petrov

Anatoly Petrov was the first of the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) school of pole vaulters. With a background in gymnastics and diving he was well qualified for this event. A graduate in physical education, he was second at the 1956 Soviet national championship with a height of 4.30 m. At the Melbourne Olympics, he was unable to repeat his championship result and placed 11th place with 4.15 m. In 1957 and 1958, he placed third at the Soviet championships.

After Petrov’s active career, he remained devoted to his home club Spartak. He coached young athletes and headed the Spartak Sports School until 1972. Later he became deputy-chairman and then for 15 years was chairman of the Sports Club Spartak, which at that time produced many champions and Olympic winners, notably in volleyball and basketball. He also held many other positions nationwide in the trade union and sports movement Spartak and was highly decorated for his achievements. He died after a long protracted illness.
