The apex of Sergey Zhelanov’s career came in 1980, when he won his only medal, a bronze, at the Soviet Championships and was selected for the Soviet Olympic team. At the Olympics, Zhelanov also won a bronze medal behind the legendary Daley Thompson and Yury Kutsenko. Besides his Olympic bronze, Zhelanov won silver at the 1981 Universiade. After finishing his sports career, Zhelanov worked as an athletics coach, serving as head coach of the Russian combined events team since 2006.
