Cathy Hardy of Fort Valley State in Georgia scored a sprint double at the 1952 AAU and at the Final Trials she ran 24.3 for 200m to break Helen Stephens’ long-standing U.S. record. At the Helsinki Olympics she failed to reach the final of either of the individual sprints but she anchored the relay team that took the gold medals with a world record. Apart from her AAU outdoor double in 1952, Cathy Hardy won the AAU indoor 50m in 1951.
