Margaret Matthews picked up an Olympic bronze medal in the relay after she had failed to qualify for the final in her specialty event. In the long jump, after setting a U.S. record of 19-4 (5.89) at the 1956 AAU, she improved to 19-9¼ (6.02) at the Final Trials but could not repeat this form in Melbourne. She won the AAU in 1957-59 and took a silver medal in long jump at the 1959 Pan American Games.
