Janice Merrill represented the United 13 times in major international meets, and several other duals, as a distance runner. In 1975 she won a gold medal at the Pan American Games in the 1,500 metres, and she won another PanAm gold in the 3,000 in 1979. At the 1977 World Cup, Merrill finished third in the 3,000. During her career she set three world records in the 5,000 in 1977, 1979, and 1980. Merrill won 10 US titles, indoors, outdoors, and in cross-country from 1976-84. She ran for Connecticut College and the Age Group Athletic Association, and later became a track coach at Old Saybrook High School and Mitchell College.
Personal Bests: 800 – 2:02.80 (1977); 1500 – 4:02.61 (1976); Mile – 4:28.3 (1979); 3000 – 8:42.6 (1978); 2 miles – 9:31.7i (1979); 5000 – 15:30.6 (1980); 10000 – 35:02.7 (1980).
