Biography

Gloria Russell threw the javelin for the Western Women’s Club. In 1928-29 she was voted California Girls’ State Athlete of the Year. At the AAU Championships in the javelin, Russell was second in 1928, third in 1932 (which doubled as the Olympic Trials), and fourth in 1929. She won the 1929 AAU baseball throw with an American record throw of 258-1 [78.66]. Russell was a top softball player, playing for the J. J. Krieg women’s team in Alameda, California, which won the US women’s title in 1938 and 1939. She did this despite having to overcome a high school injury in June 1931, in which she was struck by a thrown javelin.
